There are news from Switzerland that on a recent SWISS flight from Bangkok to Zurich, two passengers were observed by the cockpit crew “joining the Mile High Club” (having sexual intercourse in the galley.
Unfortunately, rather than having a word with them to return to their seats or letting it be, someone in the cockpit filmed the scene off the security monitor and then posted it to messenger groups.
SWISS now investigates the matter after apologizing in the media about the incident, saying that the employees actions violate company protocol and will be disciplined.
According to Swiss news site Bluewin, the flight in question was LX181 from Bangkok to Zurich (an exact date wasn’t published).
An incident on board a Swiss flight from Bangkok to Zurich is causing a stir. A crew member filmed passengers who were in an intimate situation in the aircraft galley. This recording, which was made via a monitor in the cockpit, quickly spread in internal circles and on social media.
The airline emphasized to “20 Minuten” that filming people without their consent violates its guidelines and data protection regulations. Media spokeswoman Meike Fuhlrott explained that the safety and trust of passengers is a top priority for Swiss.
Swiss would have expected the crew to intervene in such a situation instead of filming them. An internal investigation has been launched to identify those responsible and examine possible disciplinary measures.
The cameras on board Swiss aircraft are used to control access to the cockpit and are intended to ensure safety. This regulation has been in place since the attacks of September 11, 2001.
The cameras do not record anything, and filming of the monitor is only permitted in exceptional cases. Swiss is now investigating how the recordings came about and why the defined processes were not adhered to.
A message has been published on the Swiss intranet to sensitize employees and warn them about the further dissemination of the video. The airline is examining whether adjustments need to be made to training and instructions in order to guarantee the high safety standards.
It wasn’t just a picture but an entire video including vulgar, explicit commentary by one of the SWISS employees while watching the scene.
The video itself is apparently 2:30 min long, and no flight attendant was to be seen anywhere in or near the galley. It’s not that the area was unsupervised for an extended period of time, still… a couple minutes of fun on a full airplane in a public area required some balls (all pun intended).
The above scene was allegedly dubbed with the commend “First a sip of champagne and then [explicit description of oral sex].”
According to 20 Minutes, SWISS isn’t happy at all that this is making the rounds.
Swiss is aware of the video, writes media spokeswoman Meike Fuhlrott in response to a request from 20 minutes. She emphasizes that the airline is taking the incident very seriously and is investigating the exact circumstances with the utmost care. “Filming people without their clear consent and passing on these recordings contradict our guidelines and values and violate the applicable data protection regulations,” she explains. “This also applies on board.”
What is particularly questionable is that the crew did not stop the scene but filmed it. Swiss would have expected “that the crew would intervene immediately,” explains Fuhlrott. Such behavior does not meet the standards that Swiss sets for its crew members. “The safety and trust of our passengers is our highest priority,” emphasizes the spokeswoman. …
“We want to know what exactly happened and how these recordings came about,” explains Swiss spokeswoman Meike Fuhlrott. This could also refer to the saying of the person filming. “Such a comment is disrespectful and in no way corresponds to the professional standards, our values and the behavior we expect from our employees.” An internal investigation is currently underway in which the crew members of the flight in question are being questioned. “The trust of our passengers and respectful treatment are our top priority,” emphasizes Fuhlrott.
While it is absolutely not okay for the passengers to have fun in the open cabin, filming and distributing the scene is not only unacceptable but also illegal.
I have skimmed through all of the reports, but so far, nobody has reported the passengers’ identities, whether a complaint has been lodged, or whether anyone has taken legal action in form of a police complaint or civil lawsuit.
Passengers who wish to join the Mile High Club might want to find more discrete locations for it. Not the galley!
Conclusion
SWISS is currently dealing with a delicate situation as some of their crew members have filmed a couple having sexual intercourse on a flight from Bangkok to Zurich in late November.
The video, which was then distributed through messenger services and eventually leaked to the public, shows two passengers in the explicit situation in the aircraft galley during a time when no staff was around.
The monitor from where this was filmed is in the cockpit so there is very little choice of who might have been involved here. SWISS is currently handling the matter internally, but should there be any legal action being initiated by the passengers in question, this might end up dicy, probably with the termination of employment.
I would expect a pilot to be disciplined while on duty, no matter how funny the situation is. He is responsible for the aircraft and all passengers.
