The German trade union Verdi announced today that there will be a 48-hour strike at the Much Airport from February 27 to 28, 2025.
Ground services and security checks are affected, and during previous similar strikes, practically all flight activity has ceased. Lufthansa has zeroed out all Munich flights for these two dates (it won’t sell new tickets but has no cancellations yet), while other airlines are probably doing the same very soon.
You can access Lufthansa’s page for the announcement here.
Lufthansa’s Passenger Notice:
Strike announcement by the trade union ver.di at Munich Airport
The trade union ver.di could call on employees at Munich Airport to go on a two-day warning strike. There are indications that this will take place between 00:00 on Thursday, February 27 and 23:59 on Friday, February 28. The impact on the Lufthansa Group Airlines flight program is not yet known, but cancellations and delays in the Lufthansa Group flight schedule to and from Munich are expected.
Passengers who are affected by a cancellation will be informed by Lufthansa Group Airlines. Please enter your contact details in your booking.
To ensure the planning security of our travellers, the Lufthansa Group Airlines are offering all guests with flights to or from Munich in the period from 27 – 28 February a free rebooking to an earlier flight by Wednesday evening or a free cancellation of their ticket.
Remember that EC 261/2004 delay or cancellation compensation doesn’t apply if the strike activity is outside the airline’s control, which is the case here.
However, they must provide Duty to Care for all departures ex-EU/EEA and community carrier flights to EU/EEA. This means accommodation and meals in case of long delays and/or cancellations.
Affected passengers also have the right to have their tickets refunded, even if they are nonrefundable. Airlines must also book affected passengers to their final destination as soon as possible.
Conclusion
There are likely to be no flights departing or landing at Munich Airport on these two days.
If you are traveling to/from/through Munich on Thursday or Friday this week, you should contact the airline to see if they can rebook you on other services that do not touch Munich (they certainly can for flights that would only transit there).
If you incur expenses due to this strike and are departing from EU/EEA or flying on a community carrier, remember to save those accommodation and meal receipts that you need when seeking reimbursement from the airline per EC 261/2004.
