Finnair Plus moved to an entirely revenue-based program earlier this year for earning miles (they also adopted Avios) and Tier Points, which we have covered in detail.
There is a nice feature that Finnair has kept despite all these program “enhancements” that allows members to convert award miles to Tier Points (a significant amount) that makes last-minute mileage runs obsolete (+ you can always buy Avios at a reasonable price a few times a year).
You can access Finnair’s page for Avios to Tier Points conversions here.
Finnair Plus Tier Requirements:
My Current Progress:
I have documented some recent challenges with Finnair Plus after the airline moved to a revenue-based program with flights posted with the incorrect amounts and some flights earning significantly less than previously.
The program is still quite decent for partner flight credits in premium cabins.
Avios To Tier Points Information:
Exchange Avios for tier points
If you need some extra tier points to stay in your current Finnair Plus membership tier or if you want to move up to the next tier, you can exchange 3 Avios for 1 tier point with a minimum exchange of 500 tier points.
The maximum amount of tier points available for exchange is based on your current tier at the time of exchange.
- Basic and Silver members can exchange Avios for up to 7,500 tier points.
- Gold members can exchange Avios for up to 22,500 tier points.
- Platinum and Platinum Lumo members can exchange Avios for up to 40,000 tier points.
Exchanged tier points will be instantly added to your account. The points are valid until the end of your current tracking period.
Double-check the tier points you need before completing the exchange. The transaction is nonrefundable, and you may only exchange once during your personal tracking period. A service fee of €10 will be charged for exchanges online and €20 for exchanges through our customer service.
Note: tier points from exchange are not considered tier points earned from Finnair flights, which is a requirement for Platinum Lumo status.
Finnair Plus Platinum + Milestone Upgrade Vouchers:
Finnair has also changed the number and type of upgrade vouchers you earn during the qualification process. You now earn 12 one-way upgrades when renewing Platinum that you can use for short-haul or long-haul upgrades (4 vouchers for long-haul upgrades).
Finnair also offers Milestone Rewards for earning more Tier Points than the tier requires.
Finnair Plus Shop:
You need to use the Finnair Plus shop to convert Avios to Tier Points, and you can do this only once during the membership year.
You can convert the exact number of Avios to Tier Points that you wish.
There is a fee of 10 euros to do this conversion.
You can use various payment methods to settle the payment/
The purchase process is rather straightforward.
The Tier Points post immediately and the pending charge indicates that it is coded as travel.
My Current Progress After Purchase:
The purchase Tier Points post immediately and count towards the Lifetime progress. I can also see what is my progress towards the Lumo.
Conclusion
The ability to convert Avios to Tier Points at a 3:1 ratio is an excellent feature with Finnair Plus, and you can convert half of the required Tier Points.
My most recent journey with Finnair Plus (I was a member in the 1990s) started during the pandemic. They offered status miles with award miles purchase and all the associated benefits. The offer was a no-brainer, and I like to cover programs in which I actively participate.
2025 will likely be my last year at the Platinum level with Finnair Plus, however, as the airline made earning Avios and Tier Points entirely dynamic this year.
Competitively priced business tickets on their own metal are not exactly rewarding, but there are many opportunities for those booking alliance flights.
