- Billy Markus, co-creator of Dogecoin, has shared his top five favorite cryptocurrencies: Dogecoin, Bitcoin, Avalanche, Ethereum, and Solana.
- The founder noted that Ethereum’s gas fees are high and mentioned that he does not own any XRP at the moment.
Billy Markus, one of the co-founders of Dogecoin, is well-known for his candid critiques of crypto investing. Under the pseudonym Shibetoshi Nakamoto on X, a playful nod to the mysterious Bitcoin creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, Markus’s commentary often reflects his mixed feelings about the cryptocurrency space. Notably, he has stated before that “Investing in crypto is investing in mental illness,” highlighting his skepticism toward the trends and behaviors often seen in this volatile market.
Recently, he took to social media to share his favorite cryptocurrencies in a post on X dated December 16.
Here are Markus’s top five crypto picks:
- Dogecoin (DOGE) embodies the phrase, “I made it.” As the meme-coin that Markus co-created in 2013, its transformation from a simple joke to a significant player in the cryptocurrency market has been nothing short of remarkable. Currently, Dogecoin is trading at $0.408, reflecting a 1.21% increase in the last 24 hours, and it holds the position of the seventh-largest cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of $60.06 billion.
- Meanwhile, Bitcoin (BTC), known as “the coin that started it all,” continues to serve as the benchmark for the entire market. Markus recognizes its foundational role in the evolution of digital currencies, making it a staple in any meaningful conversation about cryptocurrencies.
- Avalanche (AVAX) has also gained his attention. Markus appreciates its focus on real-world use cases, especially as predictions suggest that tokenized assets could reach $16.1 trillion by 2030. He views Avalanche as a promising platform for real-world applications, particularly with its high level of customization that has attracted institutional interest, especially in utilizing the Avalanche Evergreens to address pressing problems through blockchain technology.
- Ethereum (ETH) holds a position in Markus’s portfolio as he shares, “I made money with shitcoins and NFTs on it.” His collections on platforms like OpenSea and Rarible include hundreds of NFTs created on Ethereum, featuring projects such as The Crappy Doodle Buddies and BlockyDoge.
- Solana (SOL) has emerged as a powerful platform for decentralized applications and NFTs, reflecting Markus’s earlier sentiment. The network supports various initiatives, including decentralized exchanges like Mango Markets and Orca, along with Solanart, an NFT marketplace. Currently trading at $221, Solana has seen a recent rise of 2.38% over the past week and 3.43% in the last 24 hours, though it has experienced a decline from its all-time high of $264 reached on November 22.
When asked about the absence of XRP from his list, Markus explained that he does not own any, though he joked that his opinion might change if he were to receive some. Despite not receiving attention from the Dogecoin founder, XRP is capturing the interest of other investors, largely due to the anticipated launch of its Ripple stablecoin (RLUSD) and the growing focus on the potential introduction of XRP-based ETFs.
Furthermore, the ongoing legal battle between Ripple and the SEC remains a significant factor influencing XRP’s price, as developments in this high-profile case continue to affect investor sentiment and market dynamics.
