A massive, two-story American Express Centurion Lounge – complete with an outdoor patio and some green space on the top level – is heading for Boston (BOS).
The airport’s governing board on Thursday unanimously approved a proposal from American Express to build a two-story, 20,000 square foot Centurion Lounge in the C Gates at BOS. Construction is set to begin this year with the expected opening date sometime in 2027, according to Massport documents.
A representative from American Express did not immediately respond to a request for comment on their plans. But with the airport board’s approval on Thursday, it’s officially happening.
The new Boston lounge will be built from scratch on top of an existing structure at the airport near gate C10. The facility will feature the airport’s first, grass- and plant-covered “green roof,” along with a rooftop bar and patio for lounge guests.
At 20,000 square feet, it’ll be one of the largest Centurion Lounges in Amex’s portfolio. Only time will tell if that’s big enough to prevent the overcrowding issues that have plagued American Express in the post-pandemic travel boom.
Inside the lounges, Massport officials shared renderings that should look familiar to anyone who’s popped into a Centurion Lounge – including a stately bar area and a cozy fireplace area called “The Hearth.”
Construction on the lounge is expected to begin this spring, with the lounge opening in 2027. Massport will be on the hook for building out the shell of the lounge, and Amex will then build out the interior of the lounge itself. Amex agreed to reimburse Massport for all the construction costs.
As with every Centurion Lounge, you’ll need to hold *amex platinum card* or *biz platinum* to get in.
You can also get in with Delta’s top-tier card, the *delta reserve card* or its small-business counterpart. But you have to be flying Delta that day.
The airport lounge wars are in full swing as banks and airlines try to win over flyers seeking a “premium travel” experience. Yet oddly, American Express was the only company in the running for this new lounge space in Boston.
Chase opened its first Chase Sapphire Lounge in Boston in early 2023. But with just three Capital One lounges open today (plus one airport restaurant), Capital One notably didn’t throw its hat into the ring.
Boston is a logical choice for American Express’s next lounge. It’s become a major Delta hub, and the two companies have an incredibly close (and lucrative) relationship. Delta has several of its own Sky Club lounges at the airport and a brand-new Delta One Lounge reserved for business class passengers.
Once it’s open, it would be American Express’s 19th Centurion Lounge worldwide, joining nearby locations like Philadelphia (PHL), New York City (JFK), and New York City-LaGuardia (LGA). A Centurion Lounge in Newark (EWR) is expected to open in 2026.
Massport officials also confirmed Thursday that JetBlue will be getting its own lounge in Terminal C in the future, but did not provide more details. JetBlue recently told investors that lounges at its Boston and New York City hubs were in the works.
Bottom Line
American Express is heading up to Boston (BOS) for its next Centurion Lounge.
That new lounge got final (and unanimous) sign-off from the airport’s governing board on Thursday, paving the way for a new, 20,000-square-foot lounge for top Amex cardholders. While construction is set to begin this spring, it’s not expected to open until sometime in 2027.
