You can now lend your YouTube Premium to friends

Google is testing a new YouTube Premium feature that lets subscribers share ad-free videos with non-subscribing friends, according to Android Police.

The experiment, currently limited to a small number of Premium subscribers in six countries (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Turkey, and the UK), aims to enhance sharing experiences often hindered by paywalls. With this feature, users can share up to 10 ad-free videos per month with friends who don’t have a Premium subscription.

Here’s how it works: when a Premium subscriber clicks the “Share” button on a YouTube video, they’ll see an option to “Share ad-free.” Each shared video can be viewed ad-free up to 10 times. Notably, if a subscriber shares the link with a friend who already has Premium, that view won’t count against their monthly allotment.

The system’s restrictive reach is the main caveat. For now, only a select few in the designated countries can try out this feature, prompting questions about its potential wider adoption.

YouTube Music’s AI playlists just got way more personal

If you’re among the lucky testers, we’re eager to hear about your experience: have your friends responded positively to ad-free shared videos, or remain unswayed by YouTube Premium’s charms?

  • Eligible countries for the experiment:
    • Argentina
    • Brazil
    • Canada
    • Mexico
    • Turkey
    • United Kingdom
  • Key sharing details:
    • Ad-free video shares per month: Up to 10
    • Ad-free views per shared video: Up to 10

What’s most intriguing about YouTube’s ad-free video sharing experiment isn’t the feature itself, but the subtle hint at a more nuanced approach to paywall dynamics – one that could potentially alter the calculus for subscription services seeking to balance revenue with user experience.

By limiting shared ad-free views to just 10 per video, Google astutely avoids cannibalizing Premium subscription sales while still leveraging social sharing to showcase the benefits of an ad-free experience, effectively using word-of-mouth to tantalize potential subscribers without giving away the farm.
