Deutsche Telekom and Google Cloud have announced a partnership to develop an AI agent designed to improve Radio Access Network (RAN) operations. The “RAN Guardian” agent, built using Google Cloud’s Gemini 2.0 in Vertex AI, will analyze network behavior, detect performance issues, and implement corrective actions.
The collaboration aims to address the increasing complexity of telecom networks, where traditional rule-based automation is becoming insufficient. Agentic AI, leveraging large language models (LLMs) and advanced reasoning, allows for the creation of intelligent agents capable of independent thought, action, and learning.
“Traditional network management approaches are no longer sufficient to meet the demands of 5G and beyond,” said Abdu Mudesir, Group CTO, Deutsche Telekom. “We are pioneering AI agents for networks, working with key partners like Google Cloud, to unlock a new level of intelligence and automation in RAN operations as a step towards autonomous, self-healing networks.”
The RAN Guardian agent is designed to collaborate in a human-like manner, detecting anomalies and executing self-healing actions to optimize RAN performance. This is intended to lead to improved network reliability, reduced operational costs, and enhanced customer experiences.
Key capabilities of the RAN Guardian agent
In addition to Gemini in Vertex AI, the RAN Guardian agent also uses CloudRun, BigQuery, and Firestore. Google says that these tools deliver a range of funtionalities:
- Autonomous Monitoring: The agent will continuously analyze key network parameters in real-time to predict and detect anomalies.
- AI-Driven Issue Classification: The agent will identify and prioritize network degradations based on multiple data sources.
- Proactive Optimization: The agent will recommend or autonomously implement corrective actions, such as resource reallocation and configuration adjustments.
“By combining Deutsche Telekom’s deep telecom expertise with Google Cloud’s cutting-edge AI capabilities, we’re building the next generation of intelligent networks,” said Angelo Libertucci, global industry lead, Telecommunications, Google Cloud. He added that the partnership aims for fewer disruptions, faster speeds, and an enhanced mobile experience for customers.
Demonstration at MWC 2025
and Google Cloud will showcase the RAN Guardian agent at Mobile World Congress (MWC). Abdu Mudesir and Google Cloud’s Muninder Sambi will present on how agents are shaping network operations at the Deutsche Telekom booth (#3M31, Hall 3) on March 3rd, from 13:30-14:00.
