- Coinbase director Conor Grogan suggests Satoshi Nakamoto may control 1.096 million BTC, making him one of the wealthiest figures in crypto.
- Transactions from Satoshi-linked addresses mostly targeted CaVirtEx, later acquired by Kraken, raising speculation that Kraken may hold clues to Nakamoto’s identity.
According to Coinbase Director Conor Grogan, Satoshi Nakamoto might have 1.096 million BTC, which today would be almost $108 billion. If such is accurate, Satoshi’s net worth would be higher than Bill Gates’s.
Kraken and Satoshi Nakamoto: A Hidden Connection?
Grogan discovered 24 transactions emanating from an apparently Satoshi-owned address. Most of the transactions, surprisingly, went to an address connected to Canadian crypto exchange CaVirtEx. Later in 2016, Kraken acquired the exchange.
Many are wondering: does Kraken have data that can expose Nakamoto’s identity? The response of Kraken’s official account to the results—a brief remark, “We are all Satoshi”—made this subject even more contentious. Does this have any hidden meaning or is it just a standard crypto joke?
I went through Satoshi Nakamoto's wallets; thread of new findings that I don't think have been previously reported including:
-My best guess is that Satoshi was last active onchain in 2014
-He may have used a Canadian BTC exchange (!)
-Kraken may know the identity of Satoshi pic.twitter.com/ajD2A73fm8— Conor (@jconorgrogan) February 5, 2025
Unraveling Satoshi’s Last Known Activity
Grogan further disclosed that Nakamoto most likely engaged in last blockchain action in 2014. There was then no further movement from the addresses connected to him. This supports even more the hypothesis that Satoshi might have departed the crypto sphere or at least decided to stay in the shadows.
On the other hand, earlier on, CNF reported that a leaked film from an HBO program identified Bitcoin Core developer Peter Todd as the likely Bitcoin founder. Still dubious, nevertheless, the crypto community includes BitMEX Research, who found the documentary devoid of any convincing data.
Ripple and Bitcoin: A Shared Vision?
Another fascinating detail comes from a 2009 email correspondence between Nakamoto and early Bitcoin developer Martti “Sirius.” Satoshi mentioned in the correspondence Ripple’s creative method of decentralized trust networks. He even complimented Ripple’s original trust distribution model, which he thought was unique and different from more centralized systems.
Does this imply Satoshi also helped other decentralized financial systems grow? Alternatively, is it acknowledgment of initiatives he thought fit for his vision? These queries add layers of unsolved mystery.
