These Virgin Australia flights are operated by Qatar Airways (wet lease) to circumvent Qantas’ “bribing” of Australian politicians and denying Qatar Airways extra frequencies for flights between Australia and Doha.
The fewer international flights there are to/from Australia, the higher prices the country’s dominant carrier, Qantas, can charge for them.
Qatar Airways took a stake in Virgin Australia, and then Virgin Australia decided to get back to long-haul widebody flying, which got them into trouble the first time. They did this by wet leasing aircraft and crew from their owner.
Now, you can fly on Qatar Airways codeshare flights on Virgin Australia operated by Qatar Airways itself. Absurd.
