Dominik Schiener, co-founder of the IOTA Foundation, recently published an important update about the development of the blockchain. On X, Schiener reminder users, “Remember what is coming. IOTA will be the third production L1 that natively supports Move next to Sui and Aptos.”
IOTA Rebased Gears Up For Mainnet Launch
He added, “Rebased is already live on Testnet and we are moving full steam ahead to get it to mainnet with all exchanges support, partner integrations, custodians, DApps.” This launch comes after the IOTA token holders approved the IOTA Rebased protocol update proposal in December 2024.
The IOTA Foundation has now introduced two different testing environments, namely Public Testnet and DevNet. These testing tactics ensure that the IOTA Rebased protocol is stable, secure, and functional, as mentioned previously in our report. These are meant to enable thorough testing and fine-tuning before the expected mainnet deployment.
Here, the Public Testnet provides an enduring, reliable environment for running application tests as well as upgrading protocol. Unlike previous testnets, it is designed for uninterrupted and continuous running without periodic data resets. This allows performing long-term application testing and deploying protocol upgrades with staging before implementing them on mainnet.
The IOTA Foundation will manage the network initially, but decentralization is planned through a validator onboarding program, which has yet to be disclosed. The testnet will have a token supply of 4.6 billion IOTA, controlled by the foundation, with a portion set aside for a faucet to support network participants.
To interact with the Public Testnet, users can download the IOTA Wallet browser extension, request tokens from the faucet, and explore network activity via the updated IOTA Explorer. Whilst, developers and validators can access resources on setting up full nodes and testing applications through the Foundation’s documentation portal.
About Rebased DevNet
In contrast, the DevNet serves as an experimental testing ground for protocol features under development. This network is less stable and will undergo periodic resets to accommodate testing of new upgrades. It includes data from the IOTA mainnet ledger, facilitating the evaluation of changes with a larger dataset while ensuring replay-attack safety.
The IOTA Foundation maintains full control over the DevNet, allowing for quick network adjustments and upgrades. Developers are encouraged to use the DevNet exclusively for applications requiring testing of specific protocol features. Resources for accessing and utilizing the DevNet are available on the Foundation’s documentation site.
The Public Testnet and DevNet are now live, and the IOTA Foundation is working to push the Rebased protocol forward. Developers, validators, and users are encouraged to try out these environments, providing feedback and contributing to the evolution of IOTA’s ecosystem ahead of its mainnet launch.
