There has been a development with the Holiday Inn Sydney Airport (Australia) that has become a Crowne Plaza as of December 1, 2024.
Reflags and brand changes happen pretty frequently, but flags are rarely moved up, as these tend to happen sideways or down.

Notice from Crowne Plaza Sydney Airport:
Reader’s Note:
I am usually in Australia and the French Pacific every year for December and January. Sydney is usually my base for overnight stays near Mascot (SYD) airport. I have multiple one night stays upcoming at the HI in Mascot. This evening I received an email informing me about a rebrand at the hotel (email attached). The HI will be rebranded to a CP from Dec 1, 2024 onwards.
Having stayed at this hotel in the past, if not a renovation or a refurbishment, an “enhancement” was certainly needed to upgrade the brand. Carpeting, curtains, accent and ambient lighting, all look ready for the new brand in the picture. A check on the IHG reservations website for random dates still showed the hotel as a HI.
I then called them and they confirmed the rebrand.

It seems that IHG is unsure what to call this hotel: Holiday Inn or Crowne Plaza, as it currently appears under both branding on their website.
Conclusion
Now that these hotel chains have become larger, there are so many reflags and rebrands going on, as the owners of these properties are more advanced when it comes to what flags and chains they want their hotels to be associated with.
However, rebranding what has happened with this Holiday Inn hotel at the Sydney Airport is quite rare because it is up in IHG’s brand hierarchy.
Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza are probably two of the most inconsistent brands within IHG. Both have lovely hotels and genuinely awful ones.
