Apple’s AirPods Max are getting an upgrade: lossless audio and ultra-low latency support are coming with the iOS 18.4 update in April 2024. However, there’s a catch—you’ll need a wired connection to enjoy these new features.
The iOS 18.4 update, arriving in April, enables lossless and ultra-low latency audio on the AirPods Max, but only when using a cable. Apple is also reintroducing a USB-C to 3.5mm audio cable, expanding compatibility with various devices for higher-quality listening.
Wired AirPods Max will support up to 24-bit/48 kHz lossless audio with Apple Music, surpassing Bluetooth quality. While this doesn’t reach Apple Music’s maximum Hi-Res Lossless output (24-bit/192kHz), it still enhances the listening experience, supporting “Personalized Spatial Audio” and dynamic head-tracking.

Apple highlights that the wired connection offers ultra-low latency, comparable to the built-in speakers of iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This reduction in lag makes the AirPods Max suitable for gaming and live streaming.
Alongside the free update, Apple’s new USB-C to 3.5mm audio cable is now available for order at $39.99 / £39 / AU$65. The 1.2-meter cable currently comes only in white.
The necessary software updates—iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4—will be released in April 2024. AirPods Max with USB-C remain priced at $549 / £499 / AU$899.
